Leopard Tortoise CB22

Leopard Tortoise are calm natured animals who enjoy affection and make the perfect pet, given the ideal home. They can live up to 150 years- dependent on species and grow to a variety of sizes.

In general, tortoises come out of the egg at a similar size, which is around the size of a large chickens egg, however different species grow much larger than others so it is important to find out everything you can about which species you are able to house as an adult not just a baby before you buy. Tortoises grow in different rates but generally do a lot of growing in the first 2-4 years of life, the rate usually slows down after this and they grow more gradually with age. We stock tortoise table set ups and tortoise vivarium set ups for hatchling to adult tortoises (for smaller species), we also provide custom enclosures which can be built to your specification (collection only). Tortoises originate from many different parts of Africa, Asia and Europe. The more common species being Hermann and Horsefield tortoises, larger species available in pet stores are Red Foot and Sulcata or African Spurred Tortoise. They all require slightly different care but in general they need a heat bulb to produce a basking heat and a UVB bulb which produces the UVB rays which tortoises would naturally gain from the sun.

Common in the 1960s and 70s, Tortoises are once again a regular household pet, but the way we care for them is very different. Back then, many tortoises lived in peoples gardens and were not given a heat or UVB source hence their short lifespans of around 20 years (They do not originate here and require warm temperatures to survive, there is no such thing as a ‘garden tortoise’). Now that it is common knowledge that tortoises should not live outside in the UK, they are finally receiving the care they need and thriving as pets for many years.

Tortoises require a specific diet in order to receive the nutrients that they require and would find in the wild. As a rule, try to avoid watery foods such as; Cucumber, Celery, Tomato, Iceberg Lettuce, Melon, Strawberry and only offer them as treats once a week. The main source of your tortoises’ diet should be dark leafy greens like Kale, Cabbage, Spring Greens and other rough veg. Your tortoise will prefer watery veg as they enjoy the taste and juice, but it does not contain the nutrients which your tortoise needs and will upset your tortoises’ stomach if too much is fed (you will notice watery stool). It is important to dust food 3 times a week with Calcium + D3 supplement you can also add some cuttlefish to keep your tortoise’s beak trimmed and provide entertainment.

We sell a variety of Tortoise products in-store and on our website. We try to keep many different species in store depending on availability. If you are looking for a tortoise for sale which is not on our website, please contact us.
